In addition to storing and referencing texts, the Jewish Liturgy Project encoding also supports references to non-textual material.

Some of this material has an essential connection to the text that is transcribed and encoded in a given file, namely the scanned image from which a given text was transcribed.

Contents

Linking to the scanned image(s)

Scanned image links are made using the tei:TEI/tei:facsimile element. Each identified child tei:graphic element targets the URI of one image from which the transcription was made. Individual parts of the text may be linked back to which of the listed graphics is their source via tei:link[@type='facs'].

<tei:facsimile>
  <tei:graphic xml:id="FILE_UNIQUE_ID_1" url="URI_OF_IMAGE_1"/>
  <tei:graphic xml:id="FILE_UNIQUE_ID_2" url="URI_OF_IMAGE_2"/>
</tei:facsimile>

Graphics

Background graphics and other images may be included via stand-off markup links in a support file. The link types are:

  • 'figure' - Insert a figure at the indicated position
  • 'background' - Insert a background graphic under the text at the given position.

Rendering information

Specific rendering information may be included via stand-off markup links in a support file. The processor defines how rendering information is understood. A tei:link[@type='rend'] link has as its first URI, a pointer to the text, and as its second URI, a pointer to a tei:rendition element, which will likely be in the tei:tagsDecl of the settings file's header's tei:encodingDesc.

Nonspecific rendering (eg, every time element X shows up, render it as Y) should be done via stylesheet.

Links to audio and video

Audio and video links are stored in separate support linking files. The link type is "media" and the URIs listed are the linked text (which may include intermediate pointers) and the URI of the description of the audio or video binary.

Each media file should carry a separate metadata description file (and have internal ID3 metadata) that specifies its licensing, participants, and content.

Musical notation

This will likely be considered a parallel view into the text, and handled similarly to a translation. We will have to define which XML language musical notation is represented in.
